Driver of fatal Huntington Beach hit-and-run vehicle arrested

February 28, 2014

The following information was released by the Huntington Beach Police Department.

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at about 10:55 PM, the Huntington Beach Police Department responded to the area of Edwards Street and Crosswind Drive regarding a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.

Arriving officers located the bicyclist lying in the roadway. A witness told officers the vehicle involved had fled the scene.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to render aid to the injured bicyclist. The bicyclist, a 37-year-old male from Huntington Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His name will not be released until next of kin can be notified.

Based on evidence left at the collision scene, officers were able to identify a color and vehicle type for the suspect vehicle. Officers located a gray 2012 Toyota Camry which matched the suspect vehicle information driving in the area.

The vehicle had damage consistent with a recent collision.

Officers stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver. The driver, a 29-year-old male from Oxnard, was identified as Antonio Magdaleno Jr.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on Edwards when it collided with the bicyclist who was riding southbound on Edwards in the bicycle lane.

The driver of the vehicle was interviewed at the scene. He was ultimately arrested for felony hit and run resulting in death and suspicion of DUI. He was uninjured.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the HBPD Major Incident Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T). Anyone with information about this collision is asked to contact Huntington Beach Police Accident Investigator Tai Huynh at 714-536-5670 or Accident Investigator Robert Barr at 714-536-5666. Met with the attorneys to discuss my auto accident case. I was very impressed with their knowledge and expertise in injury cases. They signed me up that day, helped me get the treatment I needed, and settled my case for an amount much more greater than expected. I’m a customer for life.
